希望工程是中国青少年发展基金会发起并组织实施的一项为青少年成长服务的社会公益事业。它的宗旨是：贯彻政府关于多渠道筹集教育经费的方针，动员海内外民间的财力资源建立基金，帮助我国贫困地区失学少年继续学业，保障适龄少年接受义务育的权利，改善贫困地区办学条件，促进贫困地区基础教育事业发展。广东希望工程自1992年5月启动以来，得到了社会各界热心人士的支持，取得了可喜的成绩。到目前为止，广东省希望工程已累计筹款1.8亿多元，资助家庭困难儿童98868名，资助困难大学生638名，援建希望小学372所，筹资和资助规模走在全国的前列。为了贯彻落实中国青基会关于希望工程实施战略重点转移的决定和“保护母亲河行动——绿色希望工程”的实施，结合我省实际，广东希望工程工作重点从对失学儿童的普遍救助转向对优秀受助生的跟踪培养和推出“扶孤助学”工程。今后广东省希望工程工作主要有五项：一是面向7万多名希望工程受助生中的优秀生跟踪培养；二是对孤儿和单亲家庭的学童实施扶孤助学；三是实施“培英工程”，帮助困难大学生读书；四是继续筹集资金援建希望小学和希望网校及教学资源库的建设；五是面向海内外筹集资金，实施“保护母亲河行动——绿色希望工程”。目前，广东每年有不少孤儿、单亲家庭学童需资助，边远山区基础教育办学条件仍需改善，珠江、北江、东江、西江。韩江等流域仍需整治，急待社会各界热心人土的支持和帮助。祈望社会各界伸出热情之手，为促进贫困地区基础教育事业的发展，为母亲河更好地造福于中华民族而作出贡献。
