Left lssey Miyake, autumn/winter 2000/01. Two parallel strands can be observed in Miyake’s work: the first in which clothing envelops the body, and the second in which the form and sihouette of the body are revealed in second-skin clothing. These can be seen especially in the ‘Bodyworks’ exhibitions of 1983-5, led, as ever, by ###estigation into new materials and textiles. Textile designer Makiko Minagawa has worked with Miyake in this Design Stuassnce its inception. Here experimental ultra-stretchy knitted messes were layered over each other and tied down in order to form covering. When relaxed, the pieces are minute in scale. This experiment fed into the development of the one-piece Spider knss that form part of the A-POC range tiny sweaters knitted in one piece. which stretch greatly to fit.
