when和while都有“当……的时候”的意思，有时可以互换，但它们的用法不同。
1、when 的用法：
1)、遵循“主将从现”原则。
如：I will call you when he comes back .
当他回来时我打电话给你。
2)、当一个动作发生的时候，另一个动作正在进行。
如：What were you doing when I came into the classroom?
当我走进教室的时候你正在干什么？
3）、当某一个动作正在进行时，另一个动作突然发生。
如：My pen dropped on the ground when I was walking in the park.
=My pen dropped on the ground while I was walking in the park.
当我在公园散步的时候我的钢笔掉在可地上。
4）、当某一个动作已发生，另一个动作已经完成，已经完成的主句的动作用过去完成时态来体现。
如：When they arrived at the station, the train had left.
当他们到达车站的时候，火车已经离开了。
5）、前后时态一致。
如：He could swim when he was three years old .
当他三岁时会游泳。
2、while 的用法（while+持续性动词）：
1）、两个动作同时进行（某个动作正在进行的同时，另一个动作也在进行之中）。
如：While he was reading, I was writing.
他在读书，我在写字。
2）、用while连接的时间状语从句一般用过去进行时，表示正在进行某一个动作时发生了另一个动作，而主句常用一般过去时。
如：The telephone rang while he was reading.
当他正在读书的时候，电话铃响了。
