Salvation is an opposite concept of original sin. "Saving" means the soul could get rebirth on the Domesday, while atonement refers to human could only save themselves through sacrifice. In The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne describes not only their crimes, also arranges ways of salvation for them. Hester is a sensitive woman earning for happiness, so she dosen't yield to the religious punishment and embedded "A" with a different symbolic meaning through her hard working. It reveals her path of self salvation from Eve to an angel.
In the beginning of the story, the scarlet "A" is a punishment that an adulteress have to wear a scarlet letter A on her chest in pillory before the public. One the scaffold, she suffered from cruel eyes on her face. But for the sake of protecting her lover Arthur and her Amor, she was fearless. She lived on border of the surburb area with her daughter Jewel, abandoed by the whole society. Although striken by uneasiness, she used her talent as a skilled embroiderer to fullfill a living for her and her girl, also aided her poor fellows. She completed her salvation by endless embroidery and selfless sacrifice. And the scarlet "A" changes from "accurse" to "acception" from people. Then Hester is not a sinner, but an angel sent by god from heaven to save people as saving herself. Hester owns a Christian spirit and a broad mind, which helps her to achieve metamorphosis from selflessly aiding people who have ever hurt her.
They get salvation through sacrifice of life and selfless devotion, and finally they could face the crimes they have commited.最后一句人称突然从“她”转变成“他们”我觉得很突兀,用people替代they会更好一点。
