True ease in writing comes from act, not chance, ①
As those move easiest who have learn’d to dance, ②
Tis not enough no harshness gives offence, ③
The sound must seem an echo to the sense, ④
Soft is the strain when zephyr gently blows, ⑤
And the smooth stream in smoother numbers flows, ⑥
But when loud surges lash the sounding shore, ⑦
The hoarse, rough verse shou’d like the torrent roar.
