No one was left in the museum now, and John was walking round to see if everything was all right. Suddenly he saw a beautiful painting lying on the floor. John picked it up and gave it to the director of the museum.
The director called several museums to check and see if it was a stolen painting, but no one claimed(认领) it. So the director decided to hang it in the museum. All the experts came to look at the painting. Each one said it was beautiful and had very deep meaning. The director was proud to have such a painting in his museum and congratulated John on his discovery.
Some weeks later a woman and her little son came to the museum. While they were looking at the new painting, the little boy began to cry. The director went over and asked him.
“Why are you crying?”
The child pointed to the painting and said, “That’s my painting on the wall and I want it back.”
“Yes,” said his mother, “he left it on the floor a few weeks ago. If you look carefully, you can see his name on the painting.”
I once knew a man whose bad memory made him famous. John Smith was so forgetful that his wife had to constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes — even his meals. As Smith was a professor at a well known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment. It wasn’t that he was not clever, just very, very absent minded. One hot summer day, Professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.
The professor’s wife was surprised to see him again so soon. “Oh, my dear, I forgot the name of the town.” “What? You forgot the name? Now I’ll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please don’t forget where you put it.”
Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Then minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.
“What is the matter now?”
“As you told me, I didn’t forget where I put the name of that town, but I forgot where I left our children!”

Poet Vadchel Lindsay told of an experience that happened to him one night when he was very tired and hungry. He stopped at a farmhouse and asked to stay overnight. He had no money, but offered to pay for his lodging by reciting original poetry. The housewife was not interested in poetry and replied, “We cannot keep you, but those people there may,” and she pointed across the field to a small house.
Lindsay went to the house where the man welcomed him and invited him in saying, “You may stay if you are willing to put up with what we have.” The house consisted of two very small rooms. There was no rug on the floor, no window shades, and not a piece of furniture worth more than two dollars. There was only a rickety old table, surrounded by a few broken chairs, a small bed and an old stove.
When Lindsay left the next morning, he was inspired. “That man had nothing,” he told a friend, “and gave me half, and we both had abundance.”
