我觉得that就代指前面那一大段话，result没有宾语，这个语境里意思估计类似于happen，意思应该是，只有when specialized equipment and workers are kept constantly active才会产生Automakers could schedule the production of different components or models on single machines,thereby eliminating the need to store the spare stocks of extra components的结果。
