英语语法——宾语从句

I can't remember what it was that made the teacher gave Mary the permission to leave the class ealier.

老师说这是一个宾语从句。为什么不能用I can't remember （that) what was it that ……,也就是说把它看成一个省略that的强调句=I can't remember (that)it was what that ……

能不能分析一下语法成分？这个it干什么的。指代谁？
为什么不能用I can't remember （that) what was it that …… 哪里不对？

what整个句子是一个特殊提问代词引导的宾语从句。因为特殊提问词除了引导特殊疑问句之外还可以充当宾语从句和表语从句及状语从句。
what it was就是直接变间接引用时的正常语序嘛。特殊疑问词+正常语序。如果是一般疑问句语序的话，就错了。因为它是插在剧中的句子嘛。

如果按你的说法，把句子写成I can't remember （that) what was it that …… 其中what was it变成了倒装，有疑问句的意思．那后面的定语从句修饰谁呢？中文都没办法翻译．

我认为你把语序调整过来就比较好理解．正常的语序应该是：

I can't remember it was what that.....

it was what 是宾语从句．这个句子的结构很完整，it 是主语，was是谓语，what表语．

that 后面的定语从句是修饰what的．

这样一来，句子的结构就非常清楚了．
