一年级 用英语怎么说

愿意是“他的第一次在学校的公众演出在他一年级时”我填的是 one 可是却是错的 one grade 不是一年级的意思么？ 我们老师说first 表示先后顺序，不太明白，请各位帮忙解释下！为什么填first 而不是 one？
