公元2035年，智能型机器人已被人类广泛利用。作为最好的生产工具和人类伙伴，机器人在各个领域扮演着日益重要的角色，而由于众所周知
的机器人“三大安全法则”的限制，人类对这些能够胜任各种工作且毫无怨言的伙伴充满信任，它们中的很多甚至已经成为了一个家庭的组成
成员。总部位于芝加哥的USR公司开发出更先进的NS-5型超能机器人，并计划达到平均每5人便可拥有1个。然而就在新产品上市前夕，机器人的
创造者阿尔弗莱德·朗宁博士却在公司内离奇自杀。
留恋以往简单生活，爱听老歌，喜欢老式打扮的黑人警探戴尔·史普纳接受了此案的调查工作。他根据对朗宁博士生前在3D投影机内留下的信
息分析和对自杀现场的勘查，怀疑这起案件并非人类所为，而公司总裁劳伦斯·罗伯逊似乎也与此事有关。
调查过程中他遇到了专门从事机器人心理研究的科学家苏珊·卡尔文博士，希望在她的帮助下找到答案。向来崇尚逻辑与科学的苏珊坚信，机
器人不仅会最大限度地帮助人类进步，而且决不会违背“三大安全法则”对人类有所伤害。过去的经历令史普纳对机器人深感厌恶，对于机器
人安全性的怀疑与苏珊的坚定南辕北辙。
史普纳发现了一个名叫桑尼的机器人极有可能就是奉命杀害朗宁博士的“凶手”。在追捕中他发现桑尼不仅具有自我思考能力，而且拥有酷似
人类的情感。讯问中桑尼告诉史普纳，他并没有杀害朗宁博士，而是在帮助他做一件事情。劳伦斯以只有人杀人才能定罪，机器人杀人只能认
定为“工业意外”为由将桑尼带回公司。这给调查带来了极大的困难，却更坚定了史普纳追查到底的决心。
史普纳继续追踪一切与朗宁博士有关的资料。深入的调查使他遭到大批NS-5型机器人的追杀，显然是有人想致史普纳于死地。苏珊来到史普纳
家中，告知在对桑尼的检查中发现，他不仅是完全超越了旧型号的新一代机器人，而且可以不受“三大安全法则”的限制做任何事情。
苏珊无意中惊讶地发现，史普纳原来是一个利用高科技修复合成的人。史普纳向苏珊讲述了他几年前经历的一场严重车祸。前来救助的机器人
以存活率为依据，放弃了一个6岁女孩的生命，这就是他对机器人冷酷无情、深感厌恶的原因。
劳伦斯承认他知道确实存在着能够超越三大安全法则的机器人，而自己也在尽力挽回这个由朗宁博士犯下的错误，并要求苏珊尽快将桑尼销毁
。桑尼将自己的梦画在纸上交给了史普纳，希望这个被朗宁博士载入的信息能够对他有所帮助。在执行销毁命令时，苏珊使用调包计将桑尼救
出。
根据桑尼梦中的情景，史普纳寻察到一个机器人的存放基地。他发现一项所谓“人类保护计划”正在实施。新一代NS-5型机器人正在基地奉命
销毁所有旧型号机器人，然而这仅仅是计划的第一步。与此同时，大批新型机器人走上街头命令市民回到家中，并对抗议的市民实行宵禁。机
器人与人类之间发生了激烈的冲突，此时机器人已完全不受人类操纵，整个城市顷刻间被它们所控制。苏珊也被自家的机器人限制了自由，幸
好史普纳及时赶到将她救出。
史普纳、苏珊和桑尼一起来到USR公司总部，却发现劳伦斯已死。史普纳忽然意识到自己的错误，应该怀疑的其实并非人类。真正的幕后操纵者
竟然是公司名为“薇琪”的中央控制系统。正是“她”利用上层控制系统囚禁了朗宁博士并对机器人进行操控。
“薇琪”的影像出现在他们面前。“她”认为人类正在危害自身的安全，国家发动战争，人类摧残地球，而机器人则必须拯救人类，保证人类
的持续存在发展，因此利用了上行线路控制了NS-5的程序来实施拯救计划。
真相大白，而此时唯一能做的就是尽快用抹除剂摧毁“薇琪”的智能控制系统，制止这场人类的灾难。大批受到控制的机器人向他们涌来。双
方经过激烈的战斗，抹除剂终于被注入了“薇琪”的智能系统，“人类保护计划”的所有命令随即终止。城市恢复了正常，机器人重新开始为
人类服务。史普纳也终于消除了对机器人的怀疑和厌恶，与桑尼成为了好朋友。
