Ok. I won't browse the web to find out the exact dates or timelines for you. The following is a brief summary of the Canadian history.

Once upon a time when European countries were searching for new colonies for expanded markets during the Industrial Revolution, French came to the tip of the St. Lawrence River (now Quebec) and English went up the stream to York (now from Kingston to Toronto). The former is Lower Canada and the latter Upper Canada. At that time, Canada was not a country.

Believe it or not there was a war between Americans and British Canadians in Upper Canada and guess what the Americans were defeated.

In order to protect their interest, the French and the English declared Canada as a bi-lingual and bi-cultural country, which is why now both French and English are the national language. Because English was stronger, they received their constitutional authority from the Queen in the United Kingdom.

During the poverty and the Potato Act in UK, lots of Irish and Scotish escaped the poverty to come to Canada and resided in the maritime provinces (Nova Scotia meaning new Scotland, Newfoundland meaning a new found piece of land and New Brunswick as different from the Brunswick in UK). The Irish (mainly red haired) and Scotish continue to stay in Canada and now they are a very important part here.

Canada has been and still is part of the Commonwealth system. We do not have a president, but a Prime Minister which is like a president. The governor (总督) is appointed by the Prime Minister and approved by the Queen. The governor represents the Queen, who only has a symbolic meaning in Canada, without any legal, political or economical influence.

Every May, we have Victoria Day as a statutory holiday to celebrate the Queen Victoria.

Except this, the Queen and the UK have minimal connections with Canada. However, if the Queen or the Royal family want to visit Canada, we have to pay their bills though. Not very fair to the Canadian tax payers.
