I was born in Valenciennes, which is situated in the north of France, very close to the Belgian border. It is a city renowned world wide for the quality of its hand made lace, and as the birthplace of the romantic painter Watteau, but it has a distinguished history for many other reasons: there remains an impressive amount of evidence from the age of the Roman empire and the early Gauls, and it participated in the history of many of the kings and queens of France, including the celebrated Emperor Napoleon. The city also suffered greatly in many of the European wars of modern times, especially the two World Wars of the twentieth century. Nevertheless, today it is more beautiful and vibrant than ever, flourishing and moving confidently into the future, as reflected by its growing industrial base and its modern public transit system. I am proud to hail from a city with such a rich history, and I feel its ancient streets and buildings have made a deep impression on what my life has become.
I have also always had an artistic nature. When I was about fourteen, my teacher advised my parents that I should be sent to a school of fine art. Unfortunately, my family was too poor to that choice at the time. But I was able to pursue a career that furthered my sense of creativity and style: after studying at a school of clothing design in Paris, I was able to obtain my diploma of “haute couture” in two years instead of the customary four. I was working in this field in Paris in 1986 when I met the American physician who was to become my husband. He enticed me to come to Philadelphia, a move I have never regretted. At this point our children are educated, have left the house, and have embarked on fruitful lives of their own, which includes blessing us with six grandchildren.
I am now able to finally become the painter that I dreamed of becoming all those years ago. That dream never left me, and it is wonderful to watch it come true at this point in my life. Whenever I find myself before a canvas, be it blank or a finished work, I experience an overwhelming sense of happiness.
