一、在定语从句中 where 有以下几个特征：

1. 前面存在 where 所指代的先行名词，它所引导的从句式修饰该名词的；

举例如下：

同义从句：This is the house in where I was born.
简单句：This is the house. I was born there（in the house）.

She moved to the city, where jobs are available.她搬到了城里，在那里工作好找。（非限制性定语从句）
先行名词：city
同义从句：She moved to the city, at which jobs are available.
简单句：She moved to the city. Jobs are available there（in the city）.

二、在地点状语从句中，where 的特征是：

1. 修饰谓语动词，说明该动词发生的处所；
2. 可以用 In a place in which取代。可以看出，不像关系副词那样直接指代先行名词，而是自身在意义上含有一个类似定语从句的结构。

举例如下：

He lives where the climate is mild. 他住在一个气候温暖的地方
1. 说明动词 lives 的发生地点；
2. 同义句：He lives in a place where (或 in which) the climate is mild.（改写后的句子添加了先行词 place 并包含了定语从句 where the climate is mild）

Where there's smoke, there's fire. 哪里有烟，哪里就有火。
1. Where there's smoke 说明 there is fire 的发生地点。
2. 同义句：There's fire at a place where is smoke.(改写后的句子道理同上)

We should go where it is quieter. 我们应该到更安静些的地方去。
改写：We should go to a place where (at which) it is quieter.

三、此外，where 还可以作为关系代词性连接词引导表语从句，如：

That is where we are going. 我们就是去那里。
改为为：That is the place where（或 to which）we are going.

That is just where you are wrong.那正是你错误所在。
改写为：That is just the point where （at which） you are wrong.

通俗一点就是，where前如果是一个名词那多数是句定语从句
如果where前是谓语或表语，那么就是状语从句
再说通俗点，就是where引导定语从句时，一定要有先行词且先行词词性一定是名词；where引导地点状语从句时，前面是谓语（即动词），或者前面是个表语（常见的是介词短语）

2.He will go to Shanghai where his two brothers live
3.The house stands at the place where the two roads meet

5句都填where，1.2句前面都是定语从句，345都是地点状语从句。
我们来解析下，1句很简单吧，宾语嘛，名词，是定语从句；
2句，虽然Shanghai前面有个TO，但是注意go to组成的谓语，所以Shanghai还是宾语
3句，where前面是个名词place，但是，注意，这句的谓语是stands，没有宾语的，后面只有一个介词短语at the place!这是个表语，所以这句引导的是地点状语从句。
45句，前面没有名词吧，都是动词也就是谓语，理所当然就是状语从句了嘛，是不？

1. 两者的区别关键在于两个从句在主句中所充当的成分不一。
where引导的定语从句在主句中做定语，修饰主句中某个表地点的代词/名词（短语），且主句的其他成分必须完整有意义。
而where引导地点状语从句则在主句中充当地点状语，其功能如同一个做地点状语的介宾短语一样，只是其形式为句子而已。且其前并不一定有表地点的代词/名词（短语）。

1）This is the city (where I lived last year).
此句为where引导的定语从句。
该定语从句是用以修饰主句中的表语the city，且主句This is the city.完整。
2）I found my purse (where I lost it).
此句为where引导地点状语从句。
该从句在主句I found my purse中充当地点状语，可以转换成如in my desk, on the playground等类似的短语。且其前为主句的宾语my purse，并不是表示地点的名词短语。
