Skipping (not attending) class has been a headache on campus for quite some time.
An increasing number of university students are now truant but have a slightly modern reason: Attending training courses outside the university to prepare better for the future.
One comment by Zhang Rui, a senior at Northwest University of Law and Politics in Xi'an, seems fairly common:"I can hardly stand dull and empty-headed courses like Marxist Philosophy or classical Chinese, which are not interesting or are no help in my future job search."
Zhang is struggling with a course at Microsoft's ATC (Authorized Training Centre) to get a certificate in computer training.
Even a vocational certificate can be useful in helping a student find a job by proving a certain ability or level of skill.
Popular places to play hooky (cut class) include training centres for the CET (college English test), computer skills test, legal profession, registered accountant exam, customs broker or civil service exam, and the humble driver's licence test.
So colleges need to consider offering courses that cater to student interests and needs. And the teachers should revise their teaching methods to liven things up.
