说的是1963年的冬季，美国冷得彻骨，来美国乐坛闯荡的加拿大男孩Terry Jacks坐在没有暖气的屋子里喝着白兰地，耳边放着法国歌手Jacques Brel的《Lemoribond》。来美国也不少日子了，但却没有音乐人对他的音乐感兴趣。他看起刚刚朋友塞给他的一张名片，背后抄了一个死刑犯的临终遗言，听着《Lemoribond》，看着名片背后的字，他拿起了吉他开始轻轻弹唱…… “在五十年代美国的一个小镇上，有两位少年，我们暂且称之为A和C吧。A和C出生于同一个社区，从小一块儿长大，他们总是一起爬树、游戏，有时候还一起干一些出格的事。反正无论如何他们都形影不离，即便是上学，他们也都是在同一个班级，如此一直到高中。A和C虽然是绝好的朋友，但他们却性格迥异。A绝对是那种你看一眼就为之倾倒的男孩：他活力十足，开朗阳光，自信，对运动也十分在行，因而人缘颇好，全校中暗恋他的女生不计其数，他还是学校橄榄球队的队长。而C的性格却恰恰相反，他很敏感害羞，不善于表达自己的情感，但是他的手工却很棒，会做各种模型。 “一切过的都很不错，但上帝却很折磨人，他让这两个男孩同时爱上了B，性感迷人的班花。结果可想而知，C默默地注视着他的朋友和爱人在一起……一直到了毕业，C成了一名木匠；而A当了卡车司机，并和B结了婚，婚后生下了女儿Michelle，B也经营了一家杂货店，那是她的嫁妆。然而，为了让家人生活得更好，让女儿能获得良好的教育，A不得不跨好几个州甚至横跨整个美国去运送货物，因而一个月只能回家一两趟来看看家人，隔一天又要坐车去送货了。相比之下，作为木匠的C就轻松多了，所以他经常来杂货店给B帮忙。 “但是时间一天天过去了，B和C日日相对，两颗孤独的心越靠越近，逐渐产生了超越朋友之间的那种感情，那种感情维系了两年，而A却丝毫没有察觉，他依旧疼爱家人，信任朋友…… “在1959年的隆冬，A依旧开着卡车上了洲际公路，但是连天的大雪使公路被封闭了，人们不得不等待公路的解封。但A等了两天，情况似乎不见好转，天气预报说这种恶劣的天气还将持续一周，于是A掉转车头开回了家，这一开又过了三天。半夜两点终于快到家了，他下车满心欢喜地给家里打了电话，但迟迟没人接听。A很担心，想到是不是女儿生病住院了。他立即开车去了C家，想打听家里的情况。他敲开了c家的门，在他眼前的竟然是两个人——他的朋友和他的妻子！这种场面即便A再迟钝也立刻明白发生了什么事，他望着眼前这两个人，只说了一个字'Why？'这种问题哪里给出答案！A掏出防身用的手枪结束了妻子和朋友的性命，然后驾车径直驶往警察局。 “他原本可以逃往临州免于死刑，但他选择了径直去警察局，在本州审判，陪审团一致通过他犯故意杀人罪，被判处死刑，于1957年2月6日执行电椅死刑。他被关在死囚牢里，离行刑还有三天，一张纸和一支笔塞了进来，给他写临终的遗言。”
