This chapter addressed the question of the temporal axis in translation referring to two extremes, namely, (a) translations made synchronously with source-text production as opposed to (b) translation undertaken long after the creation of the source text. I stressed that, although there must have been near-simultaneous whispered interpreting from time immemorial, there would, until the latter half of the 20th century, usually be an interval, sometimes a considerable delay, from the creation of the source text until it was translated into some target language. Since the middle of the 20th century, this interval has steadily diminished, and today, translation tends to be at the heels of source-text production. The factors that become prominent in this context are access to a “sender”, the presentation to the translator, and the number of recopients and target languages involved. It is noted that localisation is a strong factor in translation work and that translation is a major force in language change (with variations from country to country). This, in turn, affects the target languages, and the consequent linguistic and cultural changes contribute to the need for retranslation.
