海岸角大学成立于1962年，当时只有155名学生，海岸角大学成立之初与加纳大学具有特殊的关系。1971年，成为了独立的大学，开始颁发自己文凭。目前，学校拥有全日制注册学生16000人，非全日制学生21000人。
学校有八个学院，三个研究所。根据学校介绍，目前在非洲地区排名91位。
海岸角大学的教育学院是加纳最好的，也是学生人数最多的专业，主要为全国培养初高中教师，但是，也有学生毕业后从事其它职业。而艺术专业在加纳的名气最大。
海岸角大学医学院有7个系，250名学生，学制6年，每年学费约1200美元，而其它专业200-500美元。另外学校的体育专业，有学生232人，毕业生主要从事中小学老师或者俱乐部教练等。
海岸角大学占地面积很大，校园内树木繁茂，与加纳大学相比更有现代色彩。学校可以为7000名学生提供宿舍，另外还有250套住宅提供给教师。学校食堂散布在各处，为学生就近提供饮食，其中最小的食堂仅可以同时容纳30人左右，每个食堂均向学生和教师开放，每餐费用在3-15塞地（0.8-3.5美元）。

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) was inaugurated on December 15, 1962 as a University College and placed in a special relationship with the University of Ghana. On October 1, 1971, the University attained the status of a full and independent University with the authority to confer its own degrees, diplomas and certificates by an Act of Parliament – the University of Cape Coast Act 1971 (Act 390) and subsequently the University of Cape Coast Law, 1992 (PNDC Law 278).成立于1962年，和加纳大学有特殊的关系。

It was established out of a dire need for highly qualified and skilled manpower that would, in turn, train and develop the nation’s human capital. Thus, it was established to train graduates teachers for second cycle institutions, teacher training colleges and technical institutions - a mission the two Universities existing at the time were ill-equipped to fulfill. From an initial intake of 155 students in 1962, the University now boasts of a student population of about 17,000 regular students, 4,000 sandwich (summer) students and 20,000 distant learners.

A proposed School of Medical Sciences takes off in August, 2007 to be followed by the establishment of a Faculty of Law at a later date.
