1.时间上的区别
如果主句的动作和从句的动作同时发生，用when和while 都可以；
如果主句的动作和从句的动作有先有后，则只能用when
如：当他完成作业之后，他休息了一会。When he finished his homework,he took a short rest.这时只能用when.

2.所接动词的区别
如果从句的动作是延续性动作，那么用when和while都可以
如果从句的动作是短暂性的，那么只能用when
如：When the teacher came in ,we were talking.
进来come in是短暂性的，只能用when
但如果把这句的主句和从句交换，则用when 和while 都可以
即When(while)we were talking,the teacher came in.
因为交谈talk是延续性的

3.表示对比关系，且主从句都是进行时的时候，常用while
如They were singing while we were dancing.

4.当表示“每当……时候”，暗示一种规律时，一般用when
It's cold when it snows.

5.当从句表示将来时的时候，一般用When,且从句用一般现在时表将来，即常说的“主将从现”
When the manager comes here for a visit next week,I'll talk with hime about this.

如果一个瞬间一个延续就是我上面的两个例子
如果两个都是瞬间，必定when
when i got home,the rain stopped.

如果两个都是延续必定 while
i was reading the book while my mom was cooking.
我妈烧饭时我在读书。
