在迎接奥运的日子里
真没想到，一篇小小的奥运演讲会让我这个一贯乐观的人一筹莫展。
在迎接奥运的日子里，人们组织了各种各样的宣传活动。年初学校接到了参加北京市英语奥运演讲比赛的任务，题目是“作为志愿者，伸出你的援助之手”。
看着眼前的那张白纸，我苦思冥想却不知如何下笔。其实我从小就喜欢体育运动，从希腊到罗马，从巴黎到莫斯科，从首尔到巴塞罗那，从悉尼到雅典，每当从电视上看到一届又一届的奥运会上那令人激动的瞬间都会让我兴奋不已。可是，当真正要自己写点什么的时候，我才发现自己的笔头是那么笨拙。“写些什么呢？作为一个普通的中学生，不可能像运动员那样直接到赛场上拼搏，也不可能向奥运工作人员那样直接参与奥运的申办、组织活动，真不知写些什么，况且还要用英文！”。
思前想后，我设计了好几个方案：编一个感人至深的运动员的故事、写一篇慷慨激昂的鼓动性文字、搜罗一些回顾奥林匹克的过去和将来的宏伟文字……可是怎么看都不像自己的话，感觉怪怪的。这时，我想到了老师常说的，写文章要有真情实感，于是，我放弃了这些华而不实的打算，决心用最朴实的文字说出自己最真实的想法。
在演讲稿中，我到奥运会从一开始就是业余爱好者自愿参与的体育运动，正是他们的积极参与，使得奥运会成为举世瞩目和令人难忘的体育盛会。作为一名普通的北京市民和中学生，我要尽自己的力量为奥运做些事情，哪怕是很小的小事。我觉得最主要的一个方面是帮助外国朋友更好地了解北京，和帮助周围的人们更多地了解奥林匹克精神。我觉得作为一名小小奥运志愿者，不一定都要直接参加奥运会这样的大活动，也可以从我们身边做起。比如，要使我们的奥林匹克城市——北京更加美丽，我要加入到周围人中多种草种花，为减少污染，我要多乘地铁多骑车。
没想到就是这样一篇普普通通的稿子，被学校老师选中代表参加学校参加北京市的演讲比赛。当我怀着紧张又激动的心情走进了赛场时，看到赛场里挤满了脸上充满期待神情的中学生，我忽然感到，其实文章的好坏、甚至是否能够得奖都不那么重要了，重要的是，在迎接奥运的日子里，我能够参与其中，展现一个真实的自我，同时，对奥林匹克精神有了更深的理解。
Give a Hand as a Volunteer
From the very beginning, Olympic is a game of amateurs. It is the voluntary participation of all these people that has made Olympic games wonderful and memorable events. Next year, the Olympic game will take place in Beijing. Many people will join this event and give helpful hands as volunteers.
As a middle school student, I have been thinking about what I can do for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. I love sports, but I am not an athlete to take part in competitions directly; I am not a government official, and do not have a chance to do the preparatory work either. As an ordinary Beijing resident, what can I do?
One thing I would love to do is to help people know more about Beijing through the 2008 Olympic Game, and to help Beijing people understand the Olympic spirits. I can help the organizers to distribute brochures and flyers about Beijing, participate in activities that introduce to foreign people history, culture, and how people (especially young people) live and work in modern China. Meanwhile, I would love to participate in performance at school or in our community that help people to understand the history of the Olympic Game and the spirits it stands for. In order to do these well, I need to speak better English and to know more about history, culture and development of China.
Another thing I think I can do is to give a hand at the competition sites or stadium if I have a chance. I can help to direct people to the right places, can help pick up balls near the tennis court, or bring waters to the athletes near football pitch. Although these are very small things, but I think that the helpful hand that I can offer will be appreciated by the audience, athletes and the organizers, and make the game a pleasant experience.
I love the idea of volunteerism and would like to learn more about some inspiring volunteer programs around the world, such as the Peace Corp of the US, Doctors without Boarder of France, etc. However, I also think that not all volunteer work has to be done in a big program, or during a big event such as the Olympic game. There are so many things that we can volunteer to do in our daily life. For example, to host a "Green Olympics" and to make our Olympics City, Beijing, a more beautiful place, I will join other people to plant more trees, grass and flowers. In order to alleviate the problems of air pollution and traffic congestions, I will take buses and subways, and ride my bicycle more! There are many many small things like this that I can do to give a hand to the society that will contribute to a successful Olympic Game.
