洛杉矶的原名“Los Angeles”在西班牙语意为天使，缩写自1781年建城时的名称“博俊古辣河天使之后之镇”（El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula；博俊古辣河即今日的洛杉矶河），使得洛杉矶在中文又有“天使之城”的别称。
19世纪移民的第一批华人将“Los Angeles”以粤语音译为“罗省枝利”，老一辈华侨简称“罗省”。中华民国驻地外交机构则旧称“罗安琪”。
日语汉字译称上，1894年当地擅长汉诗(就是中文诗)的日侨船桥义七在日本人社区提倡简称“罗府”（如同华盛顿特区简称“华府”）至今，例如洛杉矶现存最大的日文报纸《罗府新报》，文化融炉影响可见一斑。
