Translation: To Study for the Rise of China (Chen Zhi)
(translated by: alexcwlin; edited by: Adam Lam)

12岁那年,周恩来离开家乡,来到了东北。当时的东北,是帝国主义列强在华争夺的焦点。
At the age of twelve, Zhou Enlai left his hometown and went to Northeastern China which was, at the time, the target of fighting for control between great foreign powers of imperialism.
他在沈阳下了车,
He got off the transportation vehicle at Shenyang.
前来接他的伯父指着一片繁华、热闹的地方,对他说:“没事可不要到那个地方去玩啊!”
His uncle, who came to pick him up, pointed at a prosperous and boisterous area and said to him: “If there is no specific purpose, don’t go to that place to play.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“为什么?”周恩来不解地问。
“Why is that?” Zhou asked in puzzlement.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“那是外国租界地,
“That is a concession territory.
惹出麻烦来可就糟了,没处说理去!”
It is really bad news if you get into trouble in there because you cannot seek justice anywhere.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“那又是为什么呢?”周恩来打破砂锅问到底。
“Why is that?” Zhou wanted to get to the bottom of the issue.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“为什么?中华不振啊!”
“Why? It is because China is weak.”
伯父叹了口气,没有再说什么。
Uncle sighed and did not say anything more.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
不久,周恩来进了东关模范学校读书。
Soon Zhou entered Dongguan Model School to study.
他始终忘不了大伯接他时说的话,
He did not forget what Uncle told him at the time of picking him up when he first came.
经常想:“租界地是什么样的?
Constantly he thought: “What does concession territory look like?
为什么中国人不能去那儿,而外国人却可以住在那里?
Why can’t Chinese go in there and yet foreigners can live inside?
这不是中国的土地吗……”
Isn’t it China’s land?”
一连串的问题使周恩来迷惑不解,
Zhou was really bewildered with a series of question.
好奇心驱使着他,一定要亲自去看个究竟。
Curiosity drove him to take a look personally and find out what was going on.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
一个风和日丽的星期天,周恩来背着大伯,约了一个要好的同学闯进了租界。
On a calm and sunny day, Zhou arranged to meet with a good friend and both of them ventured into the concession territory behind his uncle’s back.
嘿!这一带果真和别处大不相同:
Oh, this area was really different from other places.
一条条街道灯红酒绿,
Every street glittered with signs of luxurious and wild nightlife.
热闹非凡,
It was bustling with people everywhere.
街道两旁行走的大多是黄头发、白皮肤、大鼻子的外国人和耀武扬威的巡警。
Walking along both sides of the streets were mostly golden-haired, white-skinned, big-nosed foreigners and smug patrol policemen (1).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
正当周恩来和同学左顾右盼时,
Zhou and his friend were busy looking around.
忽然发现巡警局门前围着一群人,正大声吵嚷着什么。
Suddenly they found a group of people were crowding the front of a police station and clamoring about something.
他们急忙奔了过去,
Zhou and his friend hurried over.
只见人群中有个衣衫褴褛的妇女正在哭诉着什么,一个大个子洋人则得意扬扬地站在一旁。
In the crowd, a shabbily dressed woman was crying about something and a burly foreigner was cockily standing on one side.
一问才知道,这个妇女的亲人被洋人的汽车轧死了,
Upon inquiry, it appeared (2) a relative of this woman was run over and killed by a car of the foreigner.
她原指望中国的巡警局能给她撑腰,惩处这个洋人。
She expected the police would uphold justice on her behalf and punish this foreigner.
谁知中国巡警不但不惩处肇事的洋人,反而把她训斥了一通。
Who would have expected not only that the police did not penalize the foreigner, instead they gave the woman a big lecture.
围观的中国人都紧握着拳头。
The Chinese spectators standing around were indignant (3) with clenched fists.
但是,在外国租界地里,谁又敢怎么样呢?只能劝劝那个不幸的妇女。
But then in foreign-controlled concession territory there was not much people dared to do except to console the woman a little.
这时周恩来才真正体会到伯父说的“中华不振”的含义。
In that instance, Zhou experienced firsthand the meaning of “China is weak” expressed by his uncle.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
从租界地回来以后,同学们常常看到周恩来一个人在沉思,
After coming back from the concession area, classmates always saw Zhou Enlai absorbed in deep thought alone.
谁也不清楚他究竟在想什么。
Nobody was clear on what he was thinking.
直到在一次修身课上,听了周恩来的发言才解开了这个谜。
The puzzle was not resolved until Zhou spoke up during one Moral Class and students heard what he said.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
那天修身课上,魏校长向同学们提出一个问题:“请问诸生为什么而读书?”
In Moral Class on that day, Principal Wei raised a question to the students: “Please explain why students study?”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
同学们踊跃回答。
Students were very enthusiastic in answering.
有的说:“为明理而读书。”
One said: “I study to comprehend reasoning.”
有的说:“为做官而读书。”
Another one said: “I study to become a government official.”
也有的说:“为挣钱而读书。”“为吃饭而读书”……
Also others said: “I study to make money.”, “I study to earn a living.”…
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
周恩来一直静静地坐在那里,没有抢着发言。
All along Zhou was sitting quietly and did not jump to speak out.
魏校长注意到了,打手势让大家静下来,点名让他回答。
Principal Wei noticed his situation, gestured others to quiet down, and called his name to answer the question.
周恩来站了起来,清晰而坚定的回答道:
Zhou stood up and spoke with a distinct and determined voice:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“为中华之崛起而读书!”
“I study for the rise of China.” (4)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
魏校长听了为之一振!
Principal Wei felt a jolt when he heard that.
他怎么也没想到,一个十二三岁的孩子,竟有如此抱负和胸怀!
He never would have thought a twelve to thirteen year old kid would have such a lofty aspiration and mindset.
他睁大眼睛又追问了一句:“你再说一遍,为什么而读书?”
He asked again in wide-eyed: “Please repeat that again why you study?”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“为中华之崛起而读书!”
“I study for the rise of China.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
周恩来铿锵有力的话语,博得了魏校长的喝彩:“好哇!
Zhou’s resonant and purposeful words earned the praise of Principal Wei: “That’s great.
为中华之崛起!
You do it for the rise of China.
有志者当效周生啊!”
Anyone who has ambition should look to Mr. Zhou as a model.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
是的,少年周恩来在那时就已经认识到,中国人要想不受帝国主义欺凌,就要振兴中华。读书,就要以此为目标。
Yes, a youthful Zhou Enlai already recognized if Chinese did not want to be walked all over by imperialism, they had to invigorate China and set it as a goal for studying.

附注:
(1) Adjectives
Pay attention to the subtle differences in structures between these two phrases—each with a few adjectives.

(a) phrase #1
The phrase “golden-haired, white-skinned, big-nosed foreigners” is the same as “foreigners who are “golden-haired, white-skinned and big-nosed”

(b) phrase #2
The phrase “smug patrol policemen” means “patrol policemen” who are “smug”.
If you want to say “policemen” who are “smug + patrol”, you would say “smug, patrol policemen”.
(2) “it appeared”
Originally in this sentence “…it appeared a relative of this woman was run over by a car of the foreigner”, I did not put down the two words “it appeared” to be consistent with the Chinese text which did not have the expression “似乎”.

English is a logical language. Zhou obtained the information though hearsay. Without compelling evidence or seeing the happening with his eyes, the accident might not possibly be a “fact”. Without “it appeared”, the phrase “a relative of this woman was run over by a car of the foreigner” would become a “statement of fact” which may not be true.

Therefore adding “it appeared” would make the phrase more convincing.

(3) “indignant”
The word “indignant” means angry at something which is unfairly handled (“indignant” = “angry” + “unfairness”).

(4) “rise” and “emergence”
“I study for the rise of China.” can be changed to “I study for the emergence of China.”
