on board 在船上，粘合性词组（即，固定搭配）。

2）could 本身有个用法，直接指可能性，尤其是指可能性极低或不确定的情况。不过，这里根据前面的过去式（thought），估计也可能是can的过去式，表某人或某事物有能力或可以做某事（原文注释：past simple of can, used to talk about what someone or something was able or allowed to do）。
而 would表可能的时候，指的是你可以想象得到的可能性（原文注释：used to refer to a situation that you can imagine happening），即发生的可能性较高。
按原文逻辑，大家是认为船沉的可能性低（could直接用），或是船不可能沉的（原形can的过去式），故选could。possibly或be possible to只是同根近义词选择，没有影响，语法对就可以了。

3）few 这里单用，指 小数量，尤其指 不多、不足够的情况。“a few”才表示肯定的“一些”的意思。～～从语意上看，需要选few。
此外，如比较 too few 和 very few，这里因为后面有“for everybody”，则需要进一步说明救生艇lifeboat不足够，即选 too few，而不仅仅强调数量不多（very few）。
另，little的用法同few，但little后面加不可数名词；而，few后面加可数名词。这里 lifeboat可数。
