Harvard University is the oldest institution of
higher learning in the United States．It is located in
Cambridge，MassaChUsettS，on the eastern coast
of the United States．
Established in 1 636．Harvard was named after
its first benefactor，John Harvard，of Charlestown．
Massachusetts．Upon his death in 1 638，the young
minister left his library and half his possession to
the new college．I n 1 639，in recognition of John
Harvard’s bequest，the Great and’GeneraI Court
ordered that“the college agreed upon fOrmerIy tO
be built at Cambridge called Harvard College．’’
