刘勰，字彦和，东莞莒（今山东莒县）人。他的祖父刘灵真，是宋朝（南北朝时期的宋）司空（官职名）刘秀的弟弟。他的父亲刘尚，曾任越骑校尉（官职名）。刘勰很早就成了孤儿，爱好学习，志向坚定。家里贫穷没能力娶亲，依靠沙门僧的照顾，和他住在一起，共十多年，最终博览群书，精通经纶。并区分书籍的部、类，抄录并给它们写序。如今定林寺里收藏的书籍，都是刘勰整理的。
