Polymer Coating Review:
o Wash process:
Two wash lines: “Non-automotive or automotive, no skirt coating” (as described
by FM reps) wash line a short three station line (elevated temperature, spray
degreaser + 2 rinse stations with manual “leaf blower’ drying.) “Automotive,
skirt coated” piston wash machine / process similar to Dongsuh, Korea rotary
wash lines (see Dongsuh wash comments.)
Single rotary, multi-station immersion wash machine in open plant
environment for automotive skirt coating pre-wash. Manual load / unload with
manual air blow off. Wash process does not meet GM expectations for our
products. Federal Mogul representatives stated that an FM style wash process
would be installed on-site to support any GM business.
Wash processes use RO water.
o Coating process:
Automotive, D-10 coating and non-automotive hybrid type coating (J-coat, D-10
and epoxy, 45 micron thick.)
Very limited, current automotive skirt coating production at this facility.
Separate, environmentally controlled skirt coating room, but no current
production to evaluate process. Similar design / parameters to Dongsuh, Korea
process.
• Other Surface Coating:
o One spray anodizing machining on-site for coating of diesel piston domes.
o Phosphate and Sn plating capabilities on-site.
• Laboratory Facilities:
o Very basic metallurgical lab capabilities. In depth material characterization / failure
analysis would have to be handled through other FM facilities.
o Spark spectrometer for alloy chemistry analysis.
